9.0 Synchronizing and Sharing Data

Novell iFolder® allows you to manage, access, and update your files from any location by tracking changes and synchronizing those changes to all of your workstations, including your home computer, laptop, etc. To use the synchronizing function, upload a folder from your file system to an iFolder server from which the iFolder client running on your local machine can access and synchronize the data. You can also share a folder on the iFolder server and grant other users access to it.

Before you can use iFolder, your need to be registered as an authorized user on the iFolder server. To start your iFolder client, press + F2 and enter ifolder. This adds an iFolder icon to your panel. The first time you start iFolder, a wizard opens that lets you enter the name of the iFolder server, your username, and password. To automatically connect to the iFolder sever every time you start iFolder, click Remember Password.

9.1 Uploading and Synchronizing Folders

You can only synchronize your files or upload new folders when you are connected to the iFolder server.

  1. Start iFolder and log in if prompted to do so. Click the iFolder icon ( iFolder icon ) on your panel to open the main window.

  2. Click Upload a folder, then browse to an existing folder or click Create Folder to create a new folder.

  3. When the folder you want appears in the right part of the dialog, select it and click OK to upload the folder to the iFolder server.

  4. After your folder has been uploaded, it appears in the list of available iFolders. Now your client automatically synchronizes the folder contents in the default time interval. To synchronize manually, click Synchronize Now.

9.2 Sharing an iFolder

  1. Select the desired iFolder, click Share with, click the Sharing tab, then click Add to show a list of available users.

  2. Select the users you want to share the folder with from the list on the left, then click Add to transfer them to the list on the right.

  3. When the list on the right contains all the users you want to add, click OK. The Sharing tab now shows the users invited to share the folder.

  4. To modify the access rights for a user, click the username and then click Access.

  5. Select the rights you want to grant the user, then click OK to close the dialog.

  6. To apply your changes, click Close. When the added users log in to iFolder, they receive a notification about having been invited by you to share a folder.

9.3 Closing iFolder

To close the iFolder window, click iFolder Close . This leaves the iFolder client running and enables further synchronization of your files in the background. If you end your current GNOME session now, iFolder automatically starts the next time you log in and tries to reestablish the connection to the iFolder server. To log out and terminate the connection with the iFolder server, click iFolder Exit . iFolder stops tracking changes and the iFolder icon is removed from your panel.
