Chapter 1

Image Packaging System (IPS) For New Users

If you are new to Image Packaging System, go to the following sections to gain a basic understanding of IPS and the tasks that can be accomplished with IPS.

  • If you have not installed the OpenSolaris 2008.11TM release on your system, read the Getting Started With OpenSolaris 2008.11 to install and get started on OpenSolaris 2008.11.

  • Read the Introduction to IPS for a brief overview of IPS.

  • IPS provides a graphical user interface to install and manage packages. If you are trying out OpenSolaris and IPS for the first time, read the The Package Manager (IPS GUI) section and use the GUI to get started with installing packages.

  • The Update Manager is a graphical user interface which provides an easy way to update all installed packages. See the

The Update Manager for more information.

  • Don't see any developer tools on your OpenSolaris system? See the

Setting up Your OpenSolaris Development Environment to learn how to get the tools you need.

  • There may be terms used in the IPS documentation that are confusing and unfamiliar if you are new to IPS. See the Glossary for a definition of the common terms used in this document.
